...... The Chinese's Valentine's Day falls on the fifteenth day of Chinese New Year. It is called 'Chap Goh Mei' or 'Yuan Xiao'. In ancient times, it is the only day when young maidens are allowed to stroll on the streets, accompanied by only one chaperon. Young men would gather around to catch a glimpse of the lovely maidens. It is said that the matchmaker from the moon would tie the red strings of destiny on their legs. These threads will result in the couple getting together, no matter how difficult the journey to happiness might be.

...... On the night of Chap Goh Mei, singles would throw oranges into the river or seas. It is said that if someone else who sees it floating in the water picked up the fruits, the single would have a good spouse. Of course, not a lot of people do it nowadays, but the tradition prevails in more rural areas.

Lonely and very available

… but no matter what you do, you just can't seem to get men to commit? Or even having problems finding men as well? The basic survival instinct of the human mind is to look for alternatives when all else fails. If you are :

• Spending endless Saturday nights facing the TV screen with your dog.
• Going to clubs and pubs to look for a wild and happening guy but to no avail.
• Going to libraries and museums for more 'respectable' guys but to no avail.
• Hoping that Tom Cruise would whiz into your life after his break up with Nicole Kidman.
• Pleading with your Mom or Dad to fix up dates for you with some nice guys or sweet girls.

What is Feng Shui?

...... Honestly if you have no idea what Feng Shui is, chances are you will not be reading this now. Okay, supposedly that I am wrong, here is a link to introduce to you Feng Shui.

...... First of all, know your Kua number. If you don't already have it, you can calculate it here. For example, if your Kua number is 8, you belong to the West group and your Relationship (Nien Yin) direction is West. Hence it is best to place your bedroom in the West. You should also sleep with your head pointed to the West.

...... If the Relationship corner is missing in your house, you are seriously missing out on love and companionship. You don't care? Well if you seriously do not care, you would not have clicked to read this article. Love is one of the most basic human needs. The editor would flip at this, but we are all suckers for love.

...... According to many Feng Shui practitioners, there are 3 ways to partially remedy the problem of missing corners - install a light at the missing corner, hang a mirror on the wall of the missing corner or build an extension on it. These methods can only help improve your situation but they do not provide the natural relationship luck you would want.

DO NOT…

• Place your bed on the same wall as the toilet.
• Position your bed underneath a toilet on the upper floor.
• Place any water feature (such as mirrors, televisions, aquariums, vase with water etc) in the bedroom.

DO...

• Display some crystals in the Southwest corner of your home to attract romance.
• Symbols of love such as Mandarin Ducks, paintings of peonies (avoid placing real - or dried - flowers in the bedroom) in the Southwest corner of your house or bedroom is said to be able to help enhance your romance luck.
• Go out and socialize! Your future other half will not come falling from the sky right into your living room.

I do (not?)

...... If you are having troubles getting your partner to commit, try displaying some crystals in the Southwest corner of your bedroom or house. You can also install a light in that corner - turn it on at least 3 hours every day. Nevertheless, do not overdo it. Too much bright lights are … well, too bright and creates bad feng shui.

...... So you have used a compass and determined the Southwest direction of your house. Is there any chance that your toilet is placed in that corner? If it is so, you are probably having a hard time getting married even with your many suitors. If possible, lock up that toilet and use it to store things. If not, activate the Earth energy in the toilet with a brown or black wind chime made of clay. You can also place accessories made of clay, porcelain or china in the toilet. A phoenix would be beneficial, but remember to place it away as far as possible from sinks and showers. The natural fire element of the phoenix could be drowned by the water element.

Case of the wrong guy

...... The married men, non-committal men, men with baaad attitudes… why do they always enter your life?? Check your bathroom - is it located in the Southwest corner and decorated with plants? Energizing the bathroom with wood energy contaminates the 'chi'. If your bathroom is in the Southwest section, you will get romance but it will be the sort of relationship that will make you unhappy in the long run. If it is in the Southeast, you will get extra income but from questionable sources. It is better to use items symbolizing the earth element, such as porcelain or clay wind chimes.

Cracks in your marriage?

...... Married for years and the spark is burning out? Here are some grandmother-grandfather tips (meaning old Chinese beliefs) said to be able to bring a harmonious balance into your married life.

• Take down paintings of peonies in the bedroom. Peonies are the flower of love and is said to bring fresh love 'chi' into your home. Translated, it means that your other half might stray from home.

Swimming pools should not be on the
right hand side of the outside of your house.

• Do Not place any water (such as swimming pool or fish pond) on the right hand side of the outside of your home. This causes your partner to stray.
• Having water element in the bedroom could cause misunderstandings and fights. Take them away unless you are willing to stay up till the wee hours of dawn arguing over who forgot to turn off the bathroom light.

Place some lucky symbols in double,
such as this fine pair of Mandarin Ducks.

• Display some symbols of love, such as Mandarin Ducks, Double Fishes or the Dragon and Phoenix. Always place them in pairs.
• If you suspect your husband of having extramarital affairs, place a statue of a rooster facing the main door. This way, the rooster is said to 'peck away' at any tao-hua (peach blossoms - the Chinese view them as love interest) that may appear.
• If you want your other half to remain faithful to you, remember to always stay faithful to him/her.
